音樂賞析 - Harmony, Melody, and Musical Texture



Today we talked about music in its tempo, harmony, melody, theme, scale and texture. And Prof. Lin selected to play some music to physically demonstrate these musical concepts in the following: (ref. list of world's musical scales)

國文課 - 卜居 Bu-Ju



經過前二個禮拜的公文課程之後,今天我們再度回到『中國古文』詩辭賞析的部份。今天的進度是楚辭之『卜居 / Bu-Ju (means "divination")』,原作者是中國古代有名之愛國詩人『屈原 / Chu Yuan』:

屈原既放,三年,不得復見;竭知盡忠,而蔽鄣於讒,心煩慮亂,不知所從。乃往見太卜鄭詹尹曰:「余有所疑,願因先生決之。」詹尹乃端策拂龜曰:「君將何以教之?」
屈原曰:「吾寧悃悃款款朴以忠乎?將送往勞來,斯無窮乎?寧誅鋤草茅,以力耕乎?將遊大人,以成名乎?寧正言不諱,以危身乎?將從俗富貴,以媮生乎?寧超然高舉,以保真乎?將哫訾粟斯,喔咿儒兒,以事婦人乎?寧廉潔正直,以自清乎?將突梯滑稽,如脂如韋,以絜楹乎?寧昂昂若千里之駒乎?將氾氾若水中之鳧,與波上下,媮以全吾軀乎?寧與騏驥亢軛乎?將隨駑馬之*乎?寧與黃鵠比翼乎?將與雞鶩爭食乎?此孰吉孰凶?何去何從?- 世溷濁而不清,蟬翼為重,千鈞為輕;黃鐘毀棄,瓦釜雷鳴;讒人高張,賢士無名。吁嗟默默兮,誰知吾之廉貞!」
詹尹乃譯策而謝曰:「夫尺有所短,寸有所長;物有所不足,智有所不明;數有所不逮,神有所不通。用君之心,行君之意。龜策誠不能知此事。」

另外,今天 上課時候,鐘老師也與同學們確認了本學期國文課的上課時間從下次開始調整為禮拜日的『8:10am - 9:00am』和『12:10pm - 1:00pm』。成績分數的組成成份為:

  • 公文習題作業 (i.e. 內政部致各縣市政府函)
  • 期中和期末各交一篇作文或讀書心得報告
  • 每出席一節課即可獲得『平時成績』之 5 分,也就是說每週上完全程二節課可得本科學期總成績之 4 分 (=[5x2]x40%)。

音樂賞析 - Classical vs. Jazz



Continuing the topic of introduction to music theory and basic musical elements from the last week, we first talked about the definitions of beat and rhythm in music.

Then Prof. Lin made an introduction to the differences between classical music and Jazz in playing skills, training, education, listening and sustainability.

The two examples given for comparison are the song Firebird composed by Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971), who was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, and the song C Jam Blues created by Duke Ellington (1899 - 1974).

Stravinsky successfully expressed different feelings by playing the same repeated tone-set in different dynamics, speed, etc. A new creative way of music composition at the time. He was one of a kind, indeed.


November 3, 1954: Duke Ellington, a famous jazz musician, poses with his piano at the KFG Radio Studio. KFG is Fitzsimons Army Medical Center's radio station.


C Jam Blues is so impressively and intuitively to be recognized by its simple composition of the "do-do-do-do-so" tone series. A great music to enjoy! And thanks to Duke Ellington and all the great Jazz musicians.
